How GPA Is Calculated and Why It Sometimes Differs

GPA calculation seems simple — average your grades — but credit-weighting often confuses students. A 4-credit A and a 1-credit A don't contribute equally to your GPA; the 4-credit course has four times the impact, which is why a single low grade in a high-credit course can disproportionately hurt your overall GPA.

Schools use different scales, which is why a "3.5 GPA" doesn't mean the same thing everywhere. Most U.S. institutions use a 4.0 scale, but some use 4.3 or 4.5 scales that weight A+ grades higher, making direct GPA comparisons between schools sometimes misleading without knowing the underlying scale.

Cumulative GPA (all semesters combined) and term GPA (just the current semester) serve different purposes — graduate school applications typically care about cumulative GPA, while academic probation or honor roll status sometimes looks at term-by-term performance instead.

Use the calculator above to compute your GPA from your actual grades and credit hours — useful for tracking progress toward a target GPA or understanding exactly how a specific course's grade will move your overall average.
